Nigerian singer and songwriter Deborah Oluwaseyi Joshua, professionally known as Seyi Shay, has opened up about how motherhood transformed her perspective on life and helped her reconcile with her late mother’s memory. The Afrobeats star revealed how becoming a parent taught her valuable life lessons about selflessness and forgiveness.
Speaking on The Honest Bunch Podcast, Seyi Shay explained how parenthood fundamentally changed her understanding of love and sacrifice. She described how the experience helped her appreciate her own mother’s efforts in ways she had never understood before.
The “Yolo Yolo” hitmaker shared her emotional journey of healing and forgiveness. “Motherhood has taught me patience, kindness, taught me how to love. Like, not just ‘oh I love you,’ but like real love, selflessness. Being a mother has taught me how to be extremely selfless. I’m happy you touched on that because being a mother has also helped me, taught me how to forgive my mom and love and respect and appreciate every sacrifice she made for me that I didn’t realize was a sacrifice before I had my kid. I was just upset that she died. Now, my mom, I’ve forgiven. I’ve forgiven myself. I’ve forgiven my mother. I’ve let all of that go. I see from a different paradigm now,” she stated
