In 2018 They Will Tell You PDP Is Dead,But A Dead PDP Won The Incumbent With Federal Might-Makinde

 

Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo State, has stated that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) was once declared politically dead in the state, yet it went on to defeat the incumbent party despite overwhelming opposition.

 

In a video aired by ESET TV, Makinde recalled the political climate in 2017 and 2018, when media reports and public opinion suggested that the PDP had lost its relevance in Oyo State. He explained that despite these claims, the party managed to triumph over the ruling party, which held control at the federal, state, and local government levels.

Makinde said the PDP’s victory was significant because it came at a time when the party was perceived as weak and outnumbered. He emphasized that the ruling party had the advantage of federal influence, state machinery, and grassroots control, yet the PDP overcame these odds.

In Makinde’s words: “In Oyo State, we’ve gone through this before where if you read the newspapers in 2017, 2018, they will tell you, ‘Oh, PDP was dead in Oyo State.’ But a dead PDP defeated the incumbent party in Oyo State with the federal might. They were at the federal government. They were at the state government. They were at the local government.”

Makinde’s comments highlight the resilience of the PDP and its ability to mobilize support even when facing institutional disadvantages. His reflection serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of politics and the power of grassroots movements.
