D.C. pipe bombs suspect arrested by FBI

US authorities have taken a major step forward in a case that has remained unsolved for more than three years, with reports on Thursday morning confirming that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the pipe bombs planted outside the Democratic and Republican party headquarters in Washington DC on the eve of 6 January 2021. The explosive devices were planted during the night, and by the following afternoon the US Capitol was under attack as a mob of Donald Trump supporters forced their way into Congress in an attempt to block the certification of Joe Bidens 2020 presidential victory. Despite extensive investigation, no arrests had been made since a suspect was seen placing one bomb in an alley outside the Republican National Committee headquarters and another on a park bench near the Democratic National Committee headquarters. The FBI raised the reward for crucial information to 500000 dollars in 2023. On Thursday, Reuters, the Associated Press and CNN reported, citing unnamed sources, that a suspect was now in custody. It marks the first breakthrough in a case that has frustrated investigators, fuelled conspiracy theories and lingered as one of the unresolved mysteries stemming from the events surrounding the Capitol insurrection.  Video footage previously released by the FBI and obtained by the Washington Post showed the suspect walking through the neighborhood in a gray hoodie, face mask and backpack. Agents also highlighted the persons distinctive footwear: black, gray and yellow Nike Air Max Speed Turf sneakers. Although the pipe bombs were safely neutralized and caused no injuries, the FBI has repeatedly stressed that both devices were fully capable of causing serious harm. A law enforcement official said the suspect was arrested in Virginia on Thursday.
