A sermon by COGIC bishop Patrick Wooden has sparked online debate after he openly criticised Pastor Jamal Bryant over the way he introduced his wife during a church service. From the pulpit, Bishop Wooden recalled watching a preacher present his wife while she wore what he described as a black-and-flesh coloured outfit that created the illusion she had nothing underneath. According to him, the look immediately raised concerns about decency and judgment. Wooden said he later heard the preacher defend the outfit, explaining that he personally bought the dress and suggesting that critics simply had not been anywhere. That explanation, he said, made the situation even more troubling. During the sermon, Wooden was careful to stress that his criticism was not directed at the woman, but at the man who chose to present his wife in that manner. He repeated that distinction several times, saying his issue was with the husbands decision, not the wifes choice. However, his choice of words drew attention online. Wooden said the presentation made the woman appear like a two dollar wh*re, before quickly clarifying that he was not calling her that, but describing how the moment came across to viewers. He added that the statement about buying the dress came directly from the preacher himself. The bishop went further to question what kind of environments or influences would make a pastor believe such a presentation was appropriate, stating that he personally had no interest in going to places that shaped that kind of thinking.
