A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Dele Momodu, has faulted calls by supporters of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, insisting that he must emerge as the partys presidential candidate for the 2027 election. According to Momodu, it is an insult to other leaders within the ADC coalition when Obidients describe Obi as the best among all party leaders. He made the remarks on Channels Television while reacting to comments by rights activist Aisha Yesufu and economist Prof. Pat Utomi, both allies of Obi, who had warned that their support could be withdrawn if Obi is not given the ADC presidential ticket. Yesufu had argued that Obi is the best among the political figures in the ADC and should not play second fiddle to anyone in the coalition, a position earlier echoed by Utomi. Reacting to the statements, Momodu said the narrative coming from sections of the Obidient movement was divisive and dismissive of other prominent figures in the party. He cited comments suggesting that the best of us should not be made to play second fiddle to the worst of us, questioning how such labels were determined and describing the language as insulting. Momodu stressed that the ADC is made up of several experienced political leaders and said that, based on political experience, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar stands out as a leading figure in the coalition. He recalled Atikus long political history, noting that he began contesting for the presidency as far back as 1993, when he stepped down for Chief MKO Abiola. He also mentioned other figures in the coalition, including former Rivers State governor and minister, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, and former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai. According to him, Amaechi has served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, governor for two terms, and minister, while El-Rufai is a respected intellectual force within the party. Momodu rejected any suggestion that Atiku could be regarded as the worst among the aspirants, noting that the former vice president left office in 2007 and has since focused on his businesses while remaining active in public life. He also dismissed Utomis warning about withdrawing support if Obi is not chosen as the partys candidate, saying such statements amount to unnecessary threats against other aspirants. Emphasising the collective nature of the coalition, Momodu said the ADC requires the cooperation of all its members and is not built around a single individual, noting that Nigeria does not recognise independent candidacy. While acknowledging Obis popularity, he cautioned against elevating one figure above others, describing Obi as a remarkable political phenomenon but insisting that portraying him as superior to figures like Atiku and Amaechi is unfair and insulting to the rest of the coalition. The post To say Peter Obi is the best of all of them where you have the Atikus and the Amaechis is an insult to the rest of them Dele Momodu tells Obidients appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.
