Governor Fubara SA Breaks Silence, Reveals Real Reason Behind Rivers Crisis

The Special Assistant on Political Affairs to the Governor of Rivers State, Darlington Orji, has finally opened up on the underlying causes of the persistent friction between the executive arm and the State House of Assembly.

Speaking during an interview on Friday on ARISE News as monitored by POLITICS NIGERIA, Orji identified a major disagreement over a proposed supplementary budget as the primary trigger for the renewed hostilities in the state.

According to Orji, the tension reached a boiling point shortly after the lifting of the emergency rule in Rivers.

He explained that Governor Siminalayi Fubara, in a bid to stabilize governance, held a meeting with the Speaker of the House and the Majority Leader to chart a path forward for the state’s administration.

During these discussions, the legislative leadership reportedly demanded that the Governor present a supplementary budget. Their argument was based on the premise that the state budget passed by the National Assembly during the emergency rule did not specifically capture or provide for the needs of the State Assembly.

However, Governor Fubara declined the request, maintaining that the existing fiscal framework was adequate.

Orji noted that “Fubara’s refusal to present a supplementary budget the crux of Rivers crisis,” as this decision became the sticking point that stalled further cooperation between the two arms of government.

The Governor’s camp has consistently argued that the N1.48 trillion budget approved by the National Assembly remains sufficient for the 2025 fiscal year, while the lawmakers view the refusal as an attempt to starve the legislature of necessary funding and constitutional recognition.

Moreover, this revelation comes at a time when the state is witnessing another wave of political maneuvers, including a second attempt by the House to initiate impeachment proceedings against the Governor and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu.

The lawmakers have accused the Governor of extra-budgetary spending and failing to implement the financial autonomy of the legislature.
