“They Gave Me a Love Letter” — Fubara Mocks Impeachment Move by Lawmakers
Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has downplayed the impeachment notice issued against him by the Rivers State House of Assembly, describing it as a “love letter” and insisting he remains focused on governance.
The governor made the remark while addressing supporters in Port Harcourt, shortly after lawmakers moved to begin impeachment proceedings against him and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.
His comments were greeted with loud cheers from the crowd, as he appeared calm and unbothered by the political tension in the state.
POLITICS NIGERIA earlier reported that the Rivers State House of Assembly had accused the governor’s administration of gross misconduct, a move that triggered the issuance of an impeachment notice.
The process has since generated intense political debate across the state, with sharp divisions between the executive and the legislature.
However, despite a subsisting interim order from the Rivers State High Court restraining the lawmakers from continuing with the impeachment process, the Assembly announced on Friday that the Chief Judge of the state had received and acknowledged the notice served on the governor.
Speaking at the grand finale of the 2026 NPA Port Harcourt International Polo Tournament, Governor Fubara dismissed the development as a distraction. He told his supporters that he had expected a peaceful year but was instead greeted with political drama.
“I thought 2026 would be the finest but they just landed me a love letter,” the governor said.
He stressed that the political situation would not derail his administration from its responsibilities.
According to him, his government remains committed to supporting individuals and institutions that genuinely seek the progress and stability of Rivers State.
“But that, not withstanding, we must carry out our responsibility as government and we will continue to support everyone who means well for Rivers State,” he added.
