Kano Has Not Benefited From Opposition, Gov Yusuf May Join APC — Aide

Spokesperson to Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, Sanusi Bature, has explained the reasons behind speculation that the governor may defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to Bature, Kano State has historically gained little from remaining in opposition to the Federal Government, suggesting that this reality could influence the governor’s political decisions.

Bature said Kano has often found itself outside the political alignment of the centre, questioning the benefits the state has derived from such a position.

“If we look at the history of Kano and Nigerian politics, Kano has largely remained in opposition to the centre,” he said. “During the Shagari era, Kano was in opposition.

“At some point during Obasanjo’s administration, Kano was also in opposition, and under Jonathan, Kano remained in what could be described as eternal opposition.”

He added that this historical pattern raises important questions about the state’s development prospects.

“What has Kano really benefited from being on a different political path from the centre? That is a fundamental question that must be answered before any decision is taken,” Bature said.

Addressing reports about Governor Yusuf’s recent visit to President Bola Tinubu, Bature clarified that the meeting was not primarily political.
