“We Created Kwankwasiyya, Not Kwankwaso” — Kano Ex-Deputy Governor Reveals

A former Deputy Governor of Kano State, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, has claimed that the Kwankwasiyya Movement was not created by Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

He said the movement was formed by a small group of loyal supporters during a difficult political period.

Prof. Abubakar explained that the idea, name, and symbol of Kwankwasiyya came from himself and five others who stood by Kwankwaso when he was politically isolated.

Speaking on the origin of the movement, he stated, “Myself and five others created the Kwankwasiyya Movement and even gave it a red cap symbol, not Dr. Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso.”

He said the group acted when Kwankwaso was facing strong political pressure from influential figures in Kano.

According to him, the movement was born out of loyalty and survival, not personal ambition.

Prof. Abubakar added, “Dr Yunusa Adamu Dangwani, Rabiu Suleiman Bichi, myself, and others constructed the acronym of Kwankwasiyya when the going was tough and we were somewhat sidelined.”

He said their main goal at the time was to protect Kwankwaso from political collapse.

He further noted, “At that time, we gave every support to Rabiu Kwankwaso to survive the political tsunami directed at him by the political bigwigs in Kano, and that was how we created the movement.”

The former deputy governor accused Kwankwaso of failing to recognize those who helped build the movement.

He said this attitude weakened the structure and unity of Kwankwasiyya over time.

Prof. Abubakar described Kwankwaso as someone who believed he knew everything and did not value collective effort.

He said such conduct pushed away many loyal followers.

He compared Kwankwaso’s leadership style with that of the late Mallam Aminu Kano.

According to him, Mallam Aminu Kano always acknowledged the people behind NEPU, PRP, and the Sawaba Movement.

He lamented that Kwankwaso did not follow the same example.

He said the lack of appreciation created divisions and resentment within the political family.

Meanwhile, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has also made strong statements about power and loyalty in the state.

The governor spoke shortly after leaving the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

He said political authority comes only from God and not from any individual.

Governor Yusuf declared, “In 2023, it was God who gave me power, not anybody else, and I still thank and appreciate Him as the only one who will allow me to continue in 2027.”

He dismissed growing discussions about the next election cycle.

He said focusing on 2027 at this time was unnecessary and unrealistic.

The governor added, “Even all the talk about 2027 is a misplaced priority, because who knows whether he will make it to tomorrow, let alone 2027.”

Yusuf said his priority remains peace and stability in Kano State.

He stressed that governance must come before political loyalty.

He stated, “We have to get it right to have our full peace and security before talking about anything, and that is my major concern now, not anything else.”

He also made it clear that Kano State comes before any political figure or movement.

The governor said, “Let me remind everybody that, to me, Kano comes first, not loyalty to anybody. Everyone should know that no one is bigger than Kano. We shall all be loyal to Kano.”

His comments have been interpreted as a clear shift from personal political allegiance to state-focused leadership.

The statements from Prof. Abubakar and Governor Yusuf reflect growing cracks within the Kwankwasiyya political bloc.

They also point to deeper disagreements over ownership, loyalty, and direction of the movement.

In a related development, Politics Nigeria recently reported that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf formally resigned from the NNPP, citing the need to protect Kano’s political stability and pursue a broader political path ahead of future elections.
