JUST IN: Many Soldiers Feared Dead as ISWAP Terrorists Attack Military Base in Borno

Many soldiers have been killed following an attack on a military base in Sabon Gari, Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State, by militants of the Islamic State-backed Boko Haram faction, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

According to reports, the attack occurred on Thursday when the insurgents stormed the military formation, firing sporadically and inflicting heavy casualties on soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF).

“There was an attack, many soldiers were killed, but I don’t have the exact figure yet,” a military source told SaharaReporters on Saturday.

The source added that during the assault, the attackers set armoured tanks and military vehicles ablaze and escaped with an unquantifiable quantity of ammunition.

ISWAP later claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement, which was accompanied by a video showing its fighters firing towards the military facility.

The attack comes just days after seven military personnel, including a newly promoted Lieutenant Colonel, were killed in an ambush by the terrorists.

The Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed was leading troops from Maiduguri to Damasak in Mobbar Local Government Area of Borno State when they were ambushed by insurgents on Monday, January 26, 2026.

According to military sources, the terrorists deployed explosives and heavy gunfire during the ambush. While several bodies were recovered, many soldiers sustained serious injuries, and a yet-to-be-determined number of personnel remain missing.

Since the death of former Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, ISWAP has continued to strengthen its presence around the Lake Chad region, bolstered by defections of hundreds of fighters previously loyal to Shekau.
