Kano Assembly Finally Breaks Silence on Plan to Impeach Deputy Governor
The Kano State House of Assembly has officially addressed the viral reports suggesting a coordinated move to remove the Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, from office.
In a clear attempt to douse the rising political flames in the state, the legislature maintained that no such plan exists within its chambers.
Addressing journalists in Kano on Saturday, the Public Relations Officer of the Assembly, Kamaluddeen Shawai, categorically dismissed the rumors.
He described the trending reports as “baseless and misleading,” asserting that the claims were manufactured to stir up unnecessary tension among the citizens of the state.
Shawai made it clear that the House has not received any motion or initiated any process aimed at the Deputy Governor’s removal.
“There is absolutely no motion or initiative within the House to remove the deputy governor. These reports are false and should be disregarded by the public. The deputy governor continues to serve in his capacity with full support from the House.”
The spokesperson further emphasized that the Assembly is currently preoccupied with its primary responsibilities of lawmaking and oversight, rather than “speculative political manoeuvres.”
He urged media practitioners and the general public to be cautious and verify sensitive information before dissemination, noting that accurate reporting is vital for the state’s political stability.
“Our priority is good governance and serving the people of Kano, not circulating rumours,” he added.
Despite the Assembly’s denial, the political atmosphere in Kano remains charged. The friction became public after the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, recently suggested that the Deputy Governor should “honourably resign.”
Waiya argued that it was no longer politically tenable for Gwarzo to remain in the cabinet since he refused to follow his principal into the All Progressives Congress (APC).
While the Deputy Governor has maintained a public silence regarding the impeachment rumors, sources within the Government House indicate that he remains active in his official duties.
However, the ideological rift is hard to ignore, especially as Gwarzo continues to show unwavering loyalty to the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and its national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Recall that on January 26, 2026, Politics Nigeria reported that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf sent shockwaves when he officially defected to the ruling APC.
The Governor did not move alone; he was accompanied by 22 members of the State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and all 44 local government chairmen.
This mass migration has left Deputy Governor Gwarzo as one of the few high-ranking officials still holding the NNPP flag in a government that has effectively shifted its allegiance to the center.
