“Rise in Misinformation Poses Serious Risk to National Security” – Presidential Aide, Otega Ogra

The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s digital space, stressing that efforts to regulate online platforms are aimed at protecting citizens rather than silencing dissent.

Speaking on a live programme on Channels Television, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Digital and New Media, Otega Ogra, said the rise of misinformation, disinformation and coordinated online attacks poses serious risks to national security, public trust and social cohesion.

Ogra explained that the digital ecosystem has evolved rapidly, with social media now shaping public opinion, political engagement and even security outcomes. According to him, while the internet has expanded civic participation, it has also been weaponised through fake news, manipulated content and deliberate falsehoods capable of inciting unrest.

He noted that government interventions in the digital space are guided by the need to balance freedom of expression with responsibility, adding that no democracy can thrive in an environment where false information spreads unchecked.
“Every right comes with responsibility,” Ogra said, emphasising that online platforms must not become tools for undermining institutions or destabilising society.

He also highlighted the role of digital literacy, urging Nigerians to verify information before sharing it and to rely on credible sources. Ogra said the government is engaging technology companies, civil society groups and the media to develop frameworks that encourage transparency, accountability and user safety online.

The presidential aide dismissed claims that recent policies are designed to gag critics, insisting that constructive criticism remains vital to democracy. He maintained that the focus is on curbing harmful content, not legitimate debate.

The discussion comes amid growing national concern over the impact of viral misinformation on elections, security operations and public health, with experts calling for stronger collaboration between government, media organisations and tech platforms to protect Nigeria’s digital future.
