Obasanjo, Jonathan to Inaugurate National Assembly Christian Chapel in Abuja

Former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan are set to inaugurate the National Assembly Christian Chapel in Abuja on March 1.

The announcement was made in a statement co-signed on Wednesday by the President of the Christian Legislators Fellowship, Senator Binus Yaroe (PDP-Adamawa), and the Secretary, Rep. Bamidele Salam (PDP-Osun).

According to the statement, former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu will also attend the inauguration and dedication of the 750-capacity chapel.

Other dignitaries expected include the National President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Archbishop Daniel Okoh; the President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, Bishop Francis Oke; and Bishop Matthew Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, among others.

The statement said: “The dedication of the chapel represents the beginning of a new chapter in strengthening spiritual fellowship among Christian legislators and staff.

“The event, which is expected to attract eminent Nigerians from across the country, will mark a significant milestone for the Christian community within the National Assembly.

“The ceremony will bring together prominent Christian leaders, policymakers, and dignitaries in a moment of thanksgiving and spiritual reflection.”

The non-denominational chapel project was initiated in May 2019 during the tenure of former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Yakubu Dogara.

The statement noted that the chapel was conceived as a dedicated place of worship, fellowship, and prayer for Christian lawmakers and staff of the National Assembly.

It added that the chapel would serve as a spiritual hub, fostering unity, moral reflection, and faith-based support among members of the legislative community.
