Datti Baba-Ahmed Reveals How to Defeat Tinubu in Viral Video
Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the former vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has stirred reactions across Nigerian social media platforms following the release of a viral video.
In the footage, Baba-Ahmed asserts that unseating President Bola Tinubu will require a more aggressive and decisive approach, which he termed as “red eye” tactics, rather than a reliance on the nation’s judicial system.
The video, which began circulating on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, shows Baba-Ahmed delivering a sharp critique of Nigeria’s current electoral and judicial frameworks.
He alleged that the 2023 presidential election was marred by deep-seated constitutional violations that have yet to be properly addressed.
Expressing his frustration with the legal route, he stated: “I told Peter Obi, Supreme Court cannot give you governor and give you presidency. For God’s sake, stand up and do something. The Nigerian Constitution was clearly breached.”
Drawing Lessons from the June 12 Movement
Baba-Ahmed further compared the current political climate to the historic June 12 struggle.
He noted that the political actors of that era were relentless in defending their mandates and were capable of mobilizing the populace for decades to fight perceived injustices.
He remarked that if the current constitutional breaches had happened to the activists of the 1990s, they would have reacted far more forcefully.
“Now if it was the June 12 people that you breached, not just the constitution, but breached one punctuation in their interest, I swear to God, nobody will sleep,” he said.
Despite his obvious disdain for the current administration’s methods, Baba-Ahmed admitted that the ruling party possesses a high level of organizational discipline when it comes to protecting their interests.
He noted that they can sustain rallies and political pressure for over thirty years if necessary. “So as much as I dislike the fact that they abuse the Nigerian Constitution, you must give it to them. They fight for their interests, they can organise June 12 rallies, they can keep it up for three decades,” he added.
The former Senator argued that any opposition force hoping to defeat the incumbent must be willing to confront the system head-on.
He lamented a situation where those attempting to prevent the announcement of fraudulent results are often treated as criminals, while those declaring them are protected by the state.
Reiterating his core message, he emphasized: “You must show your red eyes if you’re going to defeat Tinubu, because on that day that they are declaring the result, the people declaring a fake result are criminals, and those who are stopping the declaration of fake results are good citizens. Whoever is going to defeat Tinubu must show red eye.”
However, the comments have polarized the Nigerian digital space. While some supporters of the “Obidient” movement praised his boldness and call for action, others expressed concern that such rhetoric could incite civil unrest.
They argue that suggesting “red eye” tactics over legal processes undermines the democratic transition and the rule of law.
