JUST IN: 81-Year-Old Museveni Wins Seventh Term as Uganda’s President

President Yoweri Museveni has been declared the winner of Thursday’s election, extending his four decades in power by another five years.

The Electoral Commission announced that Museveni secured 72% of the vote, while his closest challenger, Bobi Wine, received 25%.

Wine has condemned the results as “fake” and accused the authorities of “ballot stuffing,” although he has not provided evidence, and officials have not responded to the claims.

Wine has urged Ugandans to engage in non-violent protests.

Museveni, 81, first came to power as a rebel leader in 1986 and has since won seven elections.

The process was marred by violence, and Wine, a 43-year-old former pop star, claims that at least 21 people have been killed across the country in recent days. Authorities have confirmed seven deaths so far.

Internet access has been blocked nationwide since Tuesday, complicating efforts to verify information. Officials say the blackout was necessary to prevent misinformation, electoral fraud, and the incitement of violence. However, the UN human rights office condemned the move as “deeply worrying.”

According to reports a heavy police presence in the capital, Kampala, as security forces sought to prevent protests similar to those that recently erupted in Kenya and Tanzania.
