NNPP Demands Governor Yusuf’s Formal Resignation amid APC Defection

The New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, has asked Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to officially resign from the party before making any move to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The party said it is not stopping the governor from leaving. It insists, however, that he must follow due process as required by its constitution. NNPP leaders said a written resignation is compulsory.

Politics Nigeria reports that the demand was made on Tuesday in Kano during a press briefing by the state chairman of the party, Senator Elmasud Doguwa. He said the NNPP would not hold on to any member who no longer wishes to remain in the party.

According to Doguwa, Governor Yusuf remains a registered member of the NNPP until a formal resignation is submitted to the legally recognised leadership of the party. He said no such letter has been received.

“Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is still a bona fide member of the NNPP, the party with a basket of fruits as its logo,” Doguwa said.

He explained that the party respects the governor’s position and personal political decisions. However, he stressed that freedom of association does not remove the obligation to obey party rules.

“We respect him as our governor and as a member of our party. But if he chooses to leave, he has the legal right to do so. What we are insisting on is that he must formally tender his resignation to the party, which we are yet to receive.”

The NNPP’s reaction follows rising political talks in Kano suggesting that the governor may soon defect to the APC. Yusuf won the 2023 governorship election on the NNPP platform after defeating the incumbent party.

Doguwa warned that bypassing the formal resignation process could expose the governor to legal complications in the future. He linked this to ongoing court cases over the leadership of the NNPP.

“With the judgments already delivered by three courts, if Governor Yusuf decides to defect without resigning through the bona fide NNPP, it may not go without consequences if the final judgment of the Supreme Court is eventually in our favour,” he said.

Doguwa also reaffirmed that the current NNPP leadership in Kano is backed by valid court rulings. He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to recognise and enforce those judgments.
