Soldiers rescue abducted clergyman kidnapped by unknown gunmen in Enugu
The victim, Johnson Anayo Onugwu, was abducted from his residence in Ezimo community, Udenu local government area, at about 1am on January 29, 2026.
The army said the operation was carried out in conjunction with other security agencies and was driven by actionable intelligence.
Troops of 82 Division Garrison deployed at Udenu trailed the kidnappers to the Itabolo general area and engaged them at Okpakeke community.
The army said a fierce gun battle ensued during which one of the suspected kidnappers was neutralised, leading to the successful rescue of the clergyman.
It said one AK-47 rifle, two magazines and 20 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition were recovered during the operation.
The army said it remains committed to safeguarding lives and property and will continue to deny criminal elements freedom of action within the joint task force area of responsibility.
