Yelwata killings: FG announces date for suspects’ arraignment

The Federal Government on Sunday announced its plan to arraign the suspects arrested in connection with the killing of over 300 people in Yelwata village, Benue State.

The suspects, are set to be arraigned on Monday, February 2, Kamarudeen Ogundele, the special adviser to the president, Office of the AGF and Minister of Justice, said in a statement.

According to Ogundele, the suspects will be arraigned before Justice Joyce Abdul-Malik of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

He said, “This comes after a painstaking investigation and collaboration by government agencies.

“The office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice wishes to assure Nigerians that Justice will be served in the matter to send a strong signal to the enemies of the country, acting under any disguise,” Ogundele stated.

He also noted that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is committed to protecting the lives and property of all Nigerians.

“The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to the protection of lives and property of all as enshrined in the constitution,” he said.

Recall that some bandits had launched an attack on residents across the Yelwata village on June 13 and 14, 2025.

The attack led to the killing of over 300 people while about 3,000 others were said to have been displaced from their homes.

The attack began during the night of June 13, 2025, causing outrage among several individuals and bodies, locally and internationally, including Pope Leo XIV, who in his reaction said, “the majority of those killed were internally displaced people who were being housed at a local Catholic mission.”
