Peter Obi donates ₦10m to rehabilitate hospital in Enugu state

Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has donated ₦10 million to St Anthony’s Hospital in Mgbowo, Enugu state, to support efforts to rehabilitate the health facility, which he described as the only hospital serving the community and neighbouring areas.

Obi said he visited the hospital on Wednesday after attending a symposium marking the 70th birthday of Pat Utomi, noting that the facility was inherited by the Catholic Diocese of Awgu from the former Enugu Diocese.

He said the hospital, which once functioned as a major healthcare centre for several communities, had deteriorated significantly and now required urgent intervention to remain operational.

His words: “After touring the premises and assessing the condition of the facilities, I made a donation of ₦10 million.

“I realised the extensive work needed to restore the hospital, and I assured the management that, while this task cannot be handled by one person alone, I will continue to contribute monthly towards its rehabilitation.”

The former Anambra governor said missionary organisations, both Christian and Muslim, play a critical role in delivering essential social services and deserve support for helping to bridge gaps in public service delivery.

“The involvement of missionaries in providing essential social services deserves our support and commendation, as they assist the government in fulfilling its basic obligations to society,” he said.

Obi added that supporting the hospital was not only about infrastructure but about protecting life and human dignity within underserved communities.

“By offering support, we are not only restoring a facility but also reaffirming our shared responsibility to protect life and dignity in our communities,” he said.
