Nigerian Politicians Are Respected Abroad but Hated at Home — Tinubu’s Wife

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has stated that many Nigerian political leaders enjoy honour and respect outside the country but face rejection and hostility from citizens at home.

She made this known while commenting on recent international recognition given to United States President Donald Trump at the 74th Annual National Prayer Breakfast held in Washington, D.C.

Her remarks focused on what she described as the contrast between global respect for leaders and the way Nigerian leaders are treated within the country.

In a message shared on her official Facebook page on Friday night, Mrs Tinubu expressed worry over what she called a growing culture of hatred and public attacks against political leaders in Nigeria.

She said political interests and social media narratives have shaped how many citizens view those in authority.

According to her, Nigerian leaders are often celebrated in foreign countries for their positions and achievements, yet are constantly criticised and insulted at home.

“Most of our leaders are highly respected and honoured abroad, yet many Nigerians fail to value what they have because of hatred and the narratives planted in their minds by political paymasters, which have also hardened their hearts,” she wrote.

She further described how public officers are routinely targeted online, where their actions are mocked and their mistakes exaggerated.

“They bully these leaders, speak ill of them, demean them, curse them, and even seize upon their mistakes to drag them across social media, ridiculing and mocking them publicly.”

Mrs Tinubu acknowledged that leaders must be held accountable for their actions. However, she warned that constant abuse and negative campaigns weaken national unity and slow down development.

She urged Nigerians to replace insults with dialogue and to show understanding rather than hostility. She said progress can only be achieved when citizens and leaders work together with mutual respect.

The First Lady also reminded Nigerians that the country was founded on unity and shared responsibility. She stressed that cooperation between the people and government is essential for building a stronger nation.

“Let us come together to support our respected leaders and work hand in hand with them to make our country great.”
