Russia Breaks Silence on Recruiting Nigerians to Fight in Ukraine War
Russia has reacted to claims that Nigerians are being recruited to fight in the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The Russian Ambassador to Nigeria, Andrey Podyelyshev, addressed the issue during a media briefing in Abuja on Tuesday.
He said there is no official programme backed by the Russian government to enlist Nigerians for the conflict.
The ambassador explained that any recruitment activity linked to Nigerians is not recognised by the Russian state. He warned that such actions would be treated as illegal if proven.
Responding to questions from journalists, he stated: “If some illegal people are trying to recruit Nigerians to fight in Ukraine, this is not connected with the Russian state. If anybody has information, we are ready to send it to Russian law enforcement authorities for investigation.”
He used the opportunity to speak on the growing relationship between Nigeria and Russia in the area of defence and security.
According to him, both countries are exploring military cooperation, including training programmes for Nigerian personnel and the possible supply of Russian equipment.
The ambassador said some initiatives are already underway, while others are still being discussed. He added that Russia is open to expanding cooperation based on Nigeria’s interest and priorities.
He described Nigeria as a strategic partner in Africa and stressed its influence in the West African region.
In his words, Nigeria plays a major role in shaping Russia’s engagement across the sub-region and in promoting stability and development.
On international affairs, Podyelyshev restated Russia’s position on global balance of power. He said Russia supports a world order built on mutual respect, national sovereignty, and cultural diversity. He also said Moscow opposes domination by any single power.
The ambassador noted that Russia believes African nations should resolve their own challenges without pressure from foreign forces. He added that external interference in internal affairs often worsens conflicts.
He also spoke about economic and educational cooperation between both countries. Plans are underway for the establishment of a Centre for Nuclear Science and Technology in Nigeria. Scholarship opportunities for Nigerian students in Russian universities are also expected to increase.
According to him, both countries are committed to a long-term partnership that covers security, trade, and diplomacy.
