“Shut Down National Assembly!” – APC Lawmaker Demands Halt Over Insecurity

A senior lawmaker of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhassan Ado Doguwa, has raised alarm over Nigeria’s worsening insecurity and called for drastic action by the National Assembly.

He made the call during plenary session presided over by the Speaker of the House, Abbas Tajudeen.

Doguwa described the current security situation as unacceptable and deeply disturbing.
He said the scale of killings, kidnappings and banditry across the country demands an urgent and unusual response from lawmakers.

While addressing the House, the lawmaker stressed that he was speaking from within the ruling party.

“I am not an opposition. I am a member of the APC, the ruling party, and by extension a member of this government,” he said.
“But I will speak as an APC member with a particular concern.”

He acknowledged that the Federal Government and security agencies were making efforts.
However, he insisted that those efforts were not enough to match the gravity of the crisis.

“Yes, the government is doing its best. The security agencies are doing their best,” he said.
“But with every sense of responsibility and without fear of equivocation, their best is not good enough. The security situation in Nigeria today is horrific. It is tragic. It is devastating, especially in the North.”

According to him, fear has taken over many communities.
He said citizens now live under constant tension as attacks continue in both rural and urban areas.

“The fundamental responsibility of any government is the security of lives and property. What we have today is like failed security,” he stated.
“Nigeria is operating under what looks like a war against humanity.”

Doguwa warned that insecurity is no longer about politics, religion or ethnicity.
He described it as a national emergency threatening the foundation of the country.

“It is not religious. It is not political. It has no party or tribal coloration. It is a collective national challenge,” he said.

He also expressed concern about the impact of insecurity on future elections.
He questioned how peaceful polls could be held if violence continues unchecked.

“As we approach 2027, how do we expect peaceful elections when communities are engulfed in banditry and kidnappings? Farmers cannot go to farm. Traders cannot go to the market. Worshippers cannot go to mosques or churches. Then what are we legislating for?” he asked.

The lawmaker urged the House to go beyond debates and resolutions.
He said the legislature must take bold steps to force a national focus on security.

“We can even declare a legislative emergency. Close the House if necessary. Who are we legislating for when the country is running in blood and tears?” he said.

He further called on lawmakers to take responsibility at the grassroots level.
According to him, communities must be supported through organised local security structures.

“We should go back to our constituencies and reorganise vigilante groups. We must take charge of civil efforts to salvage and protect our country,” he added.

Speaking on the situation in Kano State, Doguwa said parts of southern Kano have become unsafe.
He mentioned the Polgore axis as one of the areas facing growing threats.

“What used to be a tourist attraction has now become like an extension of Sambisa Forest. Kidnappings have become a daily occurrence, like a prescribed drug taken morning, afternoon and night,” he said.

Despite his criticism, Doguwa reaffirmed loyalty to the APC and President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
He said he still believes in the government’s reform agenda.

“I have not lost hope in the Renewed Hope agenda. I remain a proud member of the APC,” he declared.

The security debate formed part of wider deliberations by the House on rising violence nationwide.
Lawmakers from different parties also called for stronger and faster action to protect lives and property.
