This is the case in Plateau State’s Mangu Local Government Area, where a developing cycle of attacks and counterattacks has been sparked by recent bloodshed. The Mwaghavul Youth Movement (MYM) is at its core, and its leaders have made resolute claims to defend their people. The MYM’s Mangu spokesperson, Satmak Bala, made it apparent that their young people are not the kind to instigate violence. According to him, the group opposes unjustified attacks on other people. He added, though, that the society has firmly decided to always defend itself if it is attacked first.
He asserts that the Mwaghavul people believe that any assault on their territory, people, or culture must be addressed with retaliation. They think that not reacting would be seen as weakness and would invite further attacks. Because of this, the young people have decided to defend their chiefdom, whether or not outside assistance is required. He underlined that when their community is damaged, only God can prevent them from acting. This demonstrates how strongly individuals feel about the necessity of self-defense. They see it as a matter of survival, honor, and letting those who have wronged them know that there would be repercussions.
Additionally, Satmak stated that it was critical that the entire world comprehend their stance. Although he thinks the Mwaghavul people are peaceful, they must be prepared to defend themselves if needed. He referred to their acts as retaliation, a means of making amends for the suffering they endure when their people are murdered or harmed. “I want to reassure you that the youth of Mwaghavul will never attack,” he stated. However, we have already vowed to take revenge on anyone who assaults the Mwaghavul chiefdom, excluding God.
