‘State-sponsored Falsehoods’ – IPOB Knocks FG For Linking Nnamdi Kanu To #EndSARS Violence

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has condemned the ongoing trial of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Naija News reports that IPOB described the proceedings as a glaring indictment of Nigeria’s judicial system and a revelation of the Federal Government’s alleged “reckless abuse” of legal processes.

In a statement issued on Friday, IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful said events that unfolded during Thursday’s session at the Federal High Court in Abuja exposed the government’s last-ditch attempt to blame Kanu for the 2020 #EndSARS protests.

Powerful called on the international community to take urgent note of what he described as a trial built on “falsehoods” and “media manipulations.”

The pro-Biafra group spokesperson alleged that the entire process was a politically motivated campaign targeting Kanu before Justice James Omotosho.

“Thursday, June 19, 2025, marks a pivotal moment in a case that has from inception been sustained by a toxic cocktail of deceit, media manipulation, evidentiary fraud, and a calculated campaign to criminalise self-determination,” he said.

According to him, the prosecution formally closed its case after cross-examinations, with the defence moving to file a No-Case Submission, arguing that no credible evidence had been presented linking Kanu to any offence under the law.

“As a result, Justice Omotosho has adjourned the case to July 18, 2025 for the adoption of final written addresses,” the statement noted.

Powerful described the day’s proceedings as a major setback for the government and accused it of manipulating the judiciary.

He said: “What transpired in court yesterday was not merely a defeat for the government—it is a full-blown indictment of the Nigerian state’s reckless abuse of the judicial process.”

The IPOB mouthpiece added that the final prosecution witness, PW5-EEE, believed to be an intelligence officer, performed poorly under cross-examination by Dr Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN.

He said: “Despite the courtroom being governed by restrictive reporting rules, it is a matter of public record that the last prosecution witness—PW5-EEE, a supposed intelligence officer—collapsed under the weight of cross-examination… The witness was evasive, contradictory, and pathetically unprepared.”

According to IPOB, the prosecution’s attempt to link Kanu to the nationwide #EndSARS protest was not only desperate but “morally obscene.”

“According to PW5-EEE, the nationwide protest against police brutality was incited by Kanu’s broadcasts, and the government now claims—absurdly—that he was its mastermind,” he said.

He further criticised the lack of evidence supporting claims that IPOB was responsible for the deaths of 200 security operatives in the South-East.

According to him, “The assessment report purportedly tying IPOB to security breaches was not even produced in 2020 when these incidents supposedly happened. It was fabricated only this month—June 2025… The autopsy reports and coroner’s certificates were unsigned, unverifiable and riddled with forgeries.”

Powerful also took aim at media houses for failing to report on what he called “courtroom bombshells.”

He said: “We are forced to ask: Why has the Nigerian press continued to ignore these courtroom bombshells? Why are media houses quick to publish every accusation made by the DSS or the prosecution, yet remain mute when those very accusations crumble under scrutiny in open court?”

He urged Nigerians and members of the global community to obtain Certified True Copies of the court proceedings to independently assess the government’s case.

Kanu is a man of peace. He is not on trial for violence. He is on trial for daring to speak truth to power and for demanding justice for a long-oppressed people… The government’s case against him is not just weak—it is a monument to state-sponsored falsehood.

“History will record those who stood by while injustice was clothed in the garments of legality. It will also remember those who rose to expose it,” the statement added.
