1. Senate Extends 2024 Budget Implementation To December 2025
The Senate on Tuesday granted a fresh extension for the implementation of the capital component of the 2024 national budget, moving the deadline from June 30, 2025 to December 31, 2025.
Naija News reports that this marks the second time the Red Chamber is extending the lifespan of the 2024 capital budget, citing the need to allow the federal government to complete ongoing infrastructure projects nationwide.
The decision followed the consideration and expeditious passage of an amended appropriation bill during plenary. The bill underwent its first, second, and third readings in one sitting, and was adopted after deliberation by the Senate Committee on Supply.
Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, who presided over Tuesday’s session, formally announced the passage of the extension bill.
Leading the debate, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations and representative of Ogun West Senatorial District, Senator Olamilekan Adeola, explained that the extension became necessary due to the government’s limited financial capacity.
He told lawmakers that several capital projects captured in the 2024 budget risked abandonment without additional time to access and utilise allocated funds.
2. President Tinubu Rejects National Assembly Library Trust Fund Bill
President Bola Tinubu has refused to give his approval to the National Assembly Library Trust Fund (Establishment) Amendment Bill, 2025, citing conflicts with current federal laws and policies.
In a correspondence directed to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, which was read by the Speaker on Tuesday, Tinubu expressed that while he recognised the commendable goals of the proposed legislation, numerous provisions within the bill were at odds with established laws and policies of the federal government.
The President noted that the bill included clauses concerning funding mechanisms for agencies under the National Assembly, taxation of national entities, public service remuneration, as well as age and years of service, which he indicated could set a perilous and unsustainable precedent.
The Nigerian leader cautioned that passing the bill into law in its present form would not only conflict with existing governance frameworks but also undermine the public interest.
3. Police Arrest 28 Suspects Over Yelwata Killings
The Nigerian Police have arrested 28 persons suspected to be masterminds of the killings in Yelwata community, Benue State.

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, while addressing a news conference in Abuja on Tuesday, said the police were on the heels of other suspects involved in the Yelwata killings.
The IGP clarified that out of the 28 arrested persons, two have been cleared as they were only used as bait to arrest the 26 suspected masterminds.
He assured Nigerians that the police are not overwhelmed as they are mopping up light and small weapons that some persons have illegally acquired.
According to Egbetokun, the security operatives are also intensifying their border patrols in order to curtail the influx of irregular migrants into the country.

Atletico Madrid defeated Brazilian side Botafogo 1-0 in their final Group B match on Monday, courtesy of a goal from Antoine Griezmann. However, the narrow win was not enough to see them through to the Round of 16, as they were eliminated on goal difference.
