The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, has said that pointing a stun gun at another individual constitutes a criminal offence, regardless of whether the weapon is lethal or not.
Jimoh made the remarks on Thursday while speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, as part of updates surrounding the ongoing investigation into the Senior Pastor of House on the Rock Church, Pastor Paul Adefarasin, who appeared in a viral video wielding a gun-like object during a church event.
The police commissioner said, “Nothing is an offence under the law except what the law states to be an offence.
“Even under the Firearms Act, if you fashion anything — even if it’s made of wood — to look like a gun and use it to intimidate or dispossess someone, that constitutes armed robbery.
“Pointing a stun gun at another individual and sending that threat and fear to such a person at that time constitutes an offence.”
According to CP Jimoh, the Lagos Police Command had already prepared a warrant of arrest for the pastor, but the clergyman voluntarily honoured the invitation sent to him.
“He turned himself in and was questioned by a team of investigators who had already begun working on the matter,” Jimoh said.
He emphasised that the investigation is still ongoing, although the pastor has been granted bail.
Jimoh clarified that the object recovered from Pastor Adefarasin was not a firearm, but rather a stun gun, which is prohibited riot control equipment under Nigerian law.
“It is not a lethal weapon, but classified under prohibited items in the riot control category,” the CP noted.
The Commissioner further disclosed that the individual at whom the stun gun was pointed would also be invited for questioning.
“It is equally on social media that the person is a content creator. We have obtained his address and will get his statement soon,” Jimoh said.
He assured that the police are committed to transparency, and once investigations are concluded, the public will be informed.
“The matter is still under investigation, and the outcome will be made public for all Nigerians to know,” Jimoh stated.
