Veteran Super Eagles forward, Ahmed Musa, has expressed anguish and outrage over the recent bloodshed in Benue State.
Over the weekend, dozens of civilians were brutally killed in what has been described as a two-day killing spree by suspected herders in the Guma Local Government Area of Benue state.
In reaction to the incident, Musa, 32, who recently returned to play for Kano Pillars in the Nigeria Premier Football League, condemned the violence and called on Nigerian leaders to go beyond mere rhetoric.
“Another wave of heartbreaking killings in Benue. How many more lives must be lost before real action is taken?” Musa wrote on his 𝕏 account. “We can’t keep condemning violence and then moving on. Don’t wait until it happens close to home or to someone you know, speak out now.”
He further called on Nigerian leaders to move beyond seasonal politics and show consistent commitment to governance, stating: “We demand more. We deserve better. Benue deserves peace. Nigeria deserves better.”
Musa’s heartfelt statement adds to the growing list of national and international reactions to the tragedy, which reportedly claimed over 200 lives. Local reports suggest entire families were wiped out, with some victims burned alive during the attacks.
In response, President Bola Tinubu condemned the killings and announced plans for an official visit to the troubled region. He directed security agencies to act decisively, promising justice for the victims.
“We must not allow this bloodletting to continue unabated. Enough is now enough,” Tinubu said in a statement. “I have directed the security agencies to arrest perpetrators of these evil acts on all sides and prosecute them.”
The President also urged Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia to initiate a process of dialogue and reconciliation aimed at restoring lasting peace to the state.
Global leaders have also taken note. At the Vatican, Pope Leo XVI offered prayers for the victims during his Sunday Angelus, describing the events as a “terrible massacre.”
