Audu said in a letter of resignation dated June 8, 2025, which was sent via Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff: “With immediate effect, I hereby formally submit my resignation as the President on Public Affairs’ Senior Special Assistant.”
Audu said in a different public statement that his resignation was motivated by conscience and principle rather than rebellion. He voiced alarm over what he said was an increasing effort by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to suppress political dissent. “Even though I do not endorse the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), I will not participate in the transformation of Nigeria into a one-party state,” he declared. “This would be a betrayal of both the essence of democracy and divine favor.”
Audu emphasized that free speech and healthy political competition are essential components of a good democracy. He compared the current administration to previous ones and cautioned against making the same mistakes by stifling criticism. “It is not leadership to crush opposition because one is in a position of power; it is a risky step backwards.” In 2003, we resisted such trends under Obasanjo. It would be politically risky and spiritually wrong to go down the same path today. He added that stifling opposing viewpoints runs against to both heavenly principles that support freedom and diversity and democratic objectives. “Why should we be afraid of ideological differences if God permits belief and disbelief to coexist?” Instead of imposing conformity, our strength must be in our capacity to compete with ideas.
Audu criticized the political alignment between President Tinubu and Minister Nyesom Wike, but he reiterated his support for the current administration despite his resignation, especially with regard to its economic reforms. “I disagree with our government’s political course, particularly the unholy partnership between PBAT and Wike, even though I still support its economic achievements. It goes against the progressive principles I uphold. “That doesn’t mean the gbas gbos will end,” he said, noting the political discussions that would ensue from his choice.
