The incident occurred during a routine patrol aimed at securing the volatile axis known for repeated bandit attacks and ambushes.
A credible source familiar with the operation told the News Agency of Nigeria that the troops encountered the armed men riding on a motorcycle and immediately engaged them in a brief but intense gunfight. The assailants, believed to be part of a larger bandit cell operating in the area, fled the scene after coming under heavy fire from the soldiers.
Following the encounter, the troops recovered an AK-47 rifle fully loaded with 30 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, which had been abandoned by the fleeing gunmen. The recovered weapon is believed to be one of many used in recent attacks and kidnappings across communities in Birnin Gwari and its environs.
Military sources say the encounter is part of ongoing efforts by the Nigerian Army to secure key routes and rural settlements in Kaduna, particularly in areas prone to bandit activities. Birnin Gwari has long been a hotspot for criminal operations with residents frequently caught in the crossfire or targeted for ransom kidnappings.
The recovery of the weapon has boosted morale among troops and locals, with calls for the military to intensify patrols and clamp down further on armed groups operating in the forested regions of southern Kaduna.
