His interview sparked a heated discussion over his economic views, specifically regarding Nigeria’s controversial policies of foreign exchange unification and the removal of subsidies. Social media has responded sharply to the debate, which was brought to light by a critical post made by President Bola Ahmad Tinubu’s adviser D. H. Bwala on X at 08:55 WAT today.

“He agreed with our policy of removal of subsidy and unifications of the foreign exchange; he claimed he would have done it better than us in a ‘organized manner’,” Bwala wrote in his post, accusing Obi of lacking depth in economic governance. He appears to know virtually little about governance and economics. “Anybody with a rational mind knows these guys are just looking to grab power; but they don’t have any alternative agenda,” Bwala added, implying that Obi’s comments were an attempt to gain control. According to reports, the interview takes place in the midst of Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms, which were started by President Bola Tinubu when he eliminated the fuel subsidy, which caused prices to soar by 200%, and unified exchange rates, which caused the naira to depreciate by 70%.
