The Benue State Government has declared Wednesday, June 18, 2025, a public holiday in honour of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visit to the state.
The decision was announced in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Serumun Deborah Aber, and made available to newsmen on Tuesday.
President Tinubu is expected to embark on a one-day condolence visit to commiserate with the government and people of Benue State following the recent wave of deadly attacks that claimed dozens of lives and displaced thousands.
The Presidency had earlier confirmed that the President would cut short his engagements to be physically present in Benue — a move described as both “significant and symbolic” amid mounting national outrage and international concern over the violence.
While the state government declared a work-free day, it clarified that the directive excludes essential service workers, including medical personnel, security operatives, and banking staff.
“Residents across the state are encouraged to come out in large numbers to welcome the President and his delegation during what has been described as a significant and symbolic visit,” the government stated.
President Tinubu’s visit comes days after over 200 people were massacred in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area, by suspected armed herdsmen, part of a wider string of assaults that have devastated Benue in recent months.
