In a striking example of grassroots resistance, villagers in Borno State are now actively defending themselves against Boko Haram insurgents, according to Senator Ali Ndume.

Speaking on May 25, 2025, and reported by Vanguard, the senator recounted how residents of Izge village in Gwoza LGA pushed back a Boko Haram attack, managing not only to drive the terrorists away but also to seize a GPMG machine gun and 13  bicycles the attackers had used.

Just days earlier, another village, Warabe, witnessed a similar act of bravery. Boko Haram fighters stormed the area in an attempt to steal cattle, but villagers confronted them head-on. According to Ndume, five of the terrorists were killed during the confrontation, and the remaining attackers fled the scene.

“In Izge, our people chased them and recovered a GPMG machine gun and bicycles,” Ndume explained. “In Warabe, they came to steal cattle, but the villagers fought back and killed five of them. The rest ran off.”

Ndume’s remarks underscore a troubling yet resilient shift: in the absence of adequate state protection, local communities are standing their ground against violent extremists.
