In a video released by TVC, Momodu recalled that Babangida previously clarified that threats from influential people in his inner circle had an impact on his decision to call off the election. Momodu reported that Babangida asserted that these powerful allies threatened to assassinate him and the election’s putative victor, Moshood Abiola, if he went ahead and gave Abiola control.
Monodu explained that Babangida’s ability to act independently was all but eliminated when these influential people agreed to stop Abiola from taking president. In his own words: “Babangida had threatened to kill him and Abiola if he turned Abiola over to him. Therefore, I think it became challenging for Babangida to be the fall guy by himself the moment they decided as a group that they would not turn Abiola over.”
