Former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman snapped a three-fight losing streak on Saturday night with a commanding unanimous decision victory over Joaquin Buckley in the main event of UFC Atlanta.
Headlining the stacked fight card at State Farm Arena, Kamaru Usman, nicknamed “The Nigerian Nightmare”, showed flashes of his former dominant self, outclassing the No. 7 ranked Buckley across five intense rounds.
Judges scored the bout 49-46 on all three scorecards in favour of the 36-year-old Nigerian-American.
Usman, ranked No. 5 heading into the fight, had not fought since his October 2023 defeat, and came into the octagon with something to prove after a tough run of three consecutive losses.
He faced a surging Buckley, who was riding a six-fight win streak and had impressed with a TKO victory over former interim champion Colby Covington last December.
But Buckley, known for his knockout power, 15 of his 27 career wins have come by KO, struggled to find his rhythm against Usman’s relentless pace, sharp striking, and grappling pressure.
Speaking after the win, an emotional Usman said, “I knew I had to come back strong. A lot of people counted me out, but I’m not done yet. I’m still here, and I’m still hungry.”
