Liverpool have officially announced the signing of German midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in a sensational deal worth £116 million, a new club record.
Florian Wirtz, 22, has signed a five-year contract that ties him to the Reds until at least 2030, following a successful medical at the club’s AXA Training Centre earlier today, June 20, 2025.
The agreement includes a guaranteed £100 million fee, with an additional £16 million in performance-related add-ons.
The total package eclipses Liverpool’s previous record signing of Virgil van Dijk (£75 million in 2018) and, if all clauses are met, would also set a new British transfer record, surpassing the £107 million Chelsea paid for Enzo Fernandez in 2023.
Wirtz becomes Liverpool’s second major signing of the summer and the second arrival from Bundesliga runners-up Bayer Leverkusen, following the acquisition of Dutch right-back Jeremie Frimpong for £29.5 million.
The highly-rated midfielder, who scored 57 goals in 197 appearances for Leverkusen, expressed his excitement about the move and his ambitions at Anfield.
“Last season they won the Premier League, so my goal is for sure to win it again and also to go further in the Champions League. I’m really ambitious,” Wirtz said in his first interview as a Liverpool player.
“I’m really excited to have a new adventure in front of me. I wanted something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and to join the Premier League. I will see how I can perform there. I hope I can do my best.”
Wirtz also revealed that conversations with players familiar with the Premier League helped shape his decision.
“I spoke with some players who played there and they told me that it’s perfect for me. Every pitch is perfect, and you can enjoy every game. I’m really looking forward to playing my first game.”
