Obun vehemently questioned why big construction projects in Nigeria are not being led by Nigerian engineers and technical experts. “You are working with Chinese individuals to build a road that would connect Lagos and Calabar. The head of the APC noted, “And we have more than 15 universities of technology in Nigeria with professors of engineering and building engineers as graduates and professors.” He also disclosed that foreign contractors are mostly responsible for the infrastructure development in the federal capital jurisdiction. “Enter Abuja and observe the people building the roads; these are Chinese people. These roads are not being constructed by Nigerians. “Where are the engineers?” Obun asked.
He bemoaned the disconnect between construction work experience and academic degrees. ‘I have a master’s degree in building engineering,’ you say, holding a piece of paper, yet you’re not actually building anything? People are building their homes in various communities as construction is ongoing in every village and area of Abuja. Who are the perpetrators? “It is never the educated people,” he said, referring to artisans.
He maintained that professionals with higher education have to start creating jobs instead of looking for them.
He targeted graduates in public communication in particular, but he also applied his critique to other professional domains. “I have stated that no mass communication student should be searching for a television station. Are you unable to use your hands? Are you unable to use your brain? Are you incapable of writing? He remarked, “There’s so much to do.” The leader of the party urged students studying media in school to do more research, especially when it comes to security issues. How many journalists have gone undercover? They can even dismantle numerous criminal organizations and bandit cells in northern Nigeria. How many of us are engaged in that activity?
