Barely 48 hours after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visit to Benue State to address escalating insecurity, suspected herdsmen have launched a fresh attack on Wannune community in Tarka Local Government Area, sending residents fleeing into nearby bushes.
Eyewitnesses told SaharaReporters on Friday that the attackers stormed the community in the evening, setting homes and property ablaze while residents ran for their lives.
“Everyone is running into the bushes for safety. Please let Nigerians pray for us. The herdsmen are ravaging the environment now,” a youth corps member serving in the area said in a distress message.
The latest attack has cast doubt on the effectiveness of the President’s recent intervention.
During his visit earlier in the week, Tinubu met with security chiefs and state stakeholders, instructing the Inspector General of Police and the Chief of Defence Staff to bring the perpetrators of violence to justice.
His trip came on the heels of a massacre in Yelewata, Guma LGA, where nearly 200 people were reportedly killed in a brutal assault that sparked national outrage.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar had criticised Tinubu’s visit, describing it as “political theatre” rather than a genuine attempt to resolve the crisis.
“It’s commendable when a leader empathises with the people… But the visit was marred by political theatrics,” said Atiku’s media adviser, Paul Ibe, in a statement.
